Scottish Recipes

Whether you’re looking for the traditional Scottish recipes you grew up with or you are discovering Scottish food for the first time, you’re in the right place. Here you’ll find a growing collection of authentic Scottish recipes, from famous bakes and comforting family meals to hearty soups, traditional desserts and everything in between.
As a Scottish baker, preserving these recipes is something I’m incredibly passionate about. Many have been passed down through my own family, while others come from my Mum’s years working in a Scottish bakery. They’ve also inspired my cookbook, Scottish Bakes, which celebrates over 50 traditional Scottish baking recipes. Whether you’re baking from the book or browsing the free recipes here on Baking with Granny, my aim has always been the same: to keep Scotland’s wonderful food traditions alive for future generations!
What is Traditional Scottish Food?
Traditional Scottish foods are usually made from simple, seasonal ingredients and recipes passed down through the generations. Scotland’s beautifully unique landscape, climate and farming traditions shaped the way people cooked – creating hearty meals that made the most of local ingredients and everyday essentials.
Oats, barley, potatoes and a variety of root vegetables have long been at the heart of Scottish cooking, alongside our world-famous Scottish salmon, Aberdeen Angus beef, lamb, game and the tastiest strawberries. Butter, cream and cheese are a big feature too, helping to give the rich flavours that you find in many traditional Scottish recipes.
Some of Scotland’s most famous dishes include haggis, neeps and tatties, Cullen Skink, Scotch broth, mince and tatties, stovies and, of course, Scotch pies. Scotland is just as well known for its whisky, fresh seafood, raspberries, blackcurrants and even the nation’s much-loved iconic drink – Irn-Bru.
Although many of these recipes and foods are known around the world, every region – and often every family – has its own variations of them, making Scottish food incredibly diverse and undoubtedly full of character!
Scottish Baking – Our Tradition
While Scotland is well known for its hearty savoury dishes, it’s the Scottish baking that has become one of the country’s greatest food traditions.
From buttery shortbread and crumbly tablet, to Empire Biscuits, clootie dumpling and Dundee Cake – Scottish baking quite literally has something for every occasion. You’ll also find bakery favourites like Butteries (or Rowies), Snowballs, Fern Cakes, Scotch Pancakes, and traditional Scottish scones, all sat alongside countless tray bakes and classic cakes in any Scottish tearoom.
Many of these recipes were created using affordable, everyday ingredients, making them easy enough for family baking, while still feeling like a proper treat. They’re the kind of recipes you’ll still find in Scottish bakeries, used for church fêtes, served in village halls, sold at school fairs and cherished in family kitchens today. And they’re exactly the sort of recipes I love sharing here on Baking with Granny and in Scottish Bakes.
Traditional Scottish Ingredients
One of the things I love most about Scottish cooking is that it doesn’t rely on overly complicated techniques. Instead, it embraces quality ingredients and simple recipes that have well and truly stood the test of time.
Some of the ingredients you’ll see time and time again throughout traditional Scottish recipes include:
- Oats
- Barley
- Potatoes & root vegetables
- Butter & cream
- Scottish strawberries & raspberries
- Honey (especially heather honey)
- Scottish salmon
- Smoked haddock
- Aberdeen Angus beef
- Lamb
- Whisky
These ingredients are some of the ones that have helped shape Scotland’s food culture for centuries, while continuing to feature in both traditional family recipes and modern Scottish cooking today.

Why Trust Baking with Granny?
Well, first of all, I am Scottish and live here in Scotland! I have also been publishing traditional recipes here on Baking with Granny for well over a decade now, with a particular love for sharing Scotland’s unbeatable baking heritage. Growing up in Scotland – and learning from my Mum’s years of working in Scottish bakeries – gave me not only a love but an extensive knowledge of the recipes that have been enjoyed here at home for generations.
That love eventually became Scottish Bakes, my first cookbook featuring over 50 traditional Scottish baking recipes. Every recipe, whether it’s published here on the website or in the book, is thoroughly tested in my own kitchen and written with clear, beginner-friendly instructions so anyone can enjoy a taste of Scotland, wherever they may be in the world. I do try to include conversions from grams to cups, too, appreciating that many bakers outside the UK prefer this.
Whether you’re Scottish and looking to recreate a taste of home, researching your family heritage, planning a Burns Night supper or are simply curious about authentic Scottish food, I hope you’ll find plenty to inspire you here!
